budget

  1. Installing an automatic standby generator can get pretty pricy depending on your needs, before you speak with a contractor, do a little research on what your needs are (see below) and understand the costs that go behind the installation.
  2. Here are a few things about the cost you should be prepared for:

    • Cost of the generator – Typically $2500 – $5000 depending on the size.
    • Cost of the installation – Can be anywhere from 2 – 3 times the cost of the generator due to the labor and other materials that go into installation of the system.
    • Cost of permitting – The installation will HAVE to be permitted, and there are costs specific to each town.
  3. If you are considering a portable generator installation with a manual switch, the cost is significantly less (between $2000 & $3000.)

what are your needs

  1. Many contractors will sell you the biggest generator they can because most people think they need their entire home covered in the event of an outage. The reality is, you don’t, most generator systems are really smart now. You can get away with a system that’s just large enough to cover the basics and that won’t break the budget.
  2. Here are some things to think about when considering your needs:

    • Do you want to manually operate your switch during an outage, or do you want it to automatically switch?
    • Do you have sump pumps or water well pumps that need to operate?
    • Do you have heat or A/C that NEEDS to operate.
    • Do you NEED to have every light on in your home, or could you survive in an outage with lighting in the key areas like bathrooms, kitchen and common rooms
  3. Once you have really thought through your needs, then you can make an educated decision on what size system is right for you. This will save you A LOT of money and time during the consultation.
